Palo Alto County Community Foundation Awards Mark and Carol Schuller Memorial Scholarship

The Mark and Carol Schuller Memorial Scholarship Fund, held with the Palo Alto County Community Foundation, announced its 2022 scholarship is awarded to Shawn Ellison. Shawn works for the Palo Alto County Health System (PACHS) on the medical/surgical floor, in the emergency room and as a resource supervisor. He is entering his second year of the family nurse practitioner program at Chamberlain College of Nursing.

“On behalf of the Palo Alto County Community Foundation, we congratulate Mr. Ellison on his scholarship award, and we thank him for his passion and commitment to healthcare,” said Don Miller, Palo Alto County Community Foundation committee chair.

The Mark and Carol Schuller Memorial Scholarship Fund awards one-year scholarships to qualified PACHS staff pursuing a healthcare related degree. The fund was established by the children of Mark and Carol Schuller in appreciation of the support their family received from hospital staff in the final weeks of both Mark and Carol’s lives as patients of the Palo Alto County Hospital. Mark and Carol were lifelong residents of Palo Alto County, and while they did not attend college, they believed strongly in the importance of education.

“This scholarship was established to honor our parents, the hospital staff for the care they provided to our parents and to others each and every day and to support continuing education,” said John Schuller, son of Mark and Carol.

The Palo Alto County Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa (CFNEIA). The establishment of the Palo Alto County Community Foundation was made possible by the generosity of the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation (PACGDC). The PACGDC continues to support the work of the Community Foundation through available match dollars to create new fund opportunities.
