Howard County Community Foundation Distributes $144,654 to Local Nonprofit Organizations

The Howard County Community Foundation (HCCF) held its 2023 grant awards celebration at the Lime Springs Community Center on January 17, announcing the distribution of $144,654.50 to 26 projects of organizations serving Howard County through its 2023 grant cycle. 

“We are very fortunate to have these organizations striving to better our communities. The Howard County Community Foundation is proud to uplift organizations creating an impact in our region,” said Amanda Keller, co-chair of the HCCF impact committee. 

Grant recipient organization, project the grant will fund, and grant amount is listed below by funding area. 

 Arts & Culture: 

  • Elma Depot Museums Association – Elam Grain Bin Gazebo Project - $5,000 
  • Lime Springs Children’s Theatre Troupe - $1,086 

Community Betterment: 

  • City of Chester – Community Center, Roller Skates - $6,000 
  • City of Cresco – Fire Department, Nozzle & Hose Upgrades - $9,996 
  • City of Cresco – Police Department, Medical Equipment Bags - $3,750 
  • City of Elma – Administration, Complex Restroom Renovations - $5,867 
  • City of Lime Springs – Fire Department, Turnout Gear - $3,400 
  • City of Lime Springs – Park Board, Ball Park Cement Project - $9,456 
  • First Freedom, Inc. – Theater Room Programming Improvements - $4,000 
  • Howard County – Sheriff’s Office, Shotguns - $5,581 
  • Lubbert’s Park in Saratoga – Slide and Improvement of the Parking Area - $3,607 

Education & Youth Development: 

  • City of Elma – Library, Technology & Bilingual Upgrades - $2,500 
  • CRICCET – Howard County Daycare Solutions - $15,000 
  • Riceville Community School – Preschool & Daycare Playground Upgrades - $15,000 
  • Spring Ahead Learning Center – Refrigerator Replacement - $2,271 
  • Trinity Catholic School – Computer Science and STEM in the Classroom - $4,000 

Environment & Animal Welfare: 

  • Cresco Wildlife Club – Club Expansion - $5,000 
  • Fish & Game Club – Vets Deer Blind - $2,000 

Health: 

  • American Red Cross, Blood Services – 2024 & 2025 American Red Cross Blood Drives - $1,000 
  • Mitchell County Memorial Foundation – Riceville Clinic Project - $15,000 
  • Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging – Howard County Congregate and Home Delivery Meals - $5,000 

Human Service: 

  • Northeast Iowa Community Action – Howard County Crisis and Food Pantry Program - $5,000 
  • Northeast Iowa Food Bank – Feeding Communities - $10,000 
  • Riceville Community Foundation – Elf Shop, Program Funds - $3,000 
  • Riceville Food Pantry – Freezer Upgrade - $1,049 
  • Riverview Center – Howard County Crisis Response Toolkit- $5,000 

Decisions on grant awards are determined by a local committee, which consists of volunteers from Howard County. Committee members include Amanda Keller (chair), Alice Back, Kristen Burke, Rosalie Christensen, Becky Fritcher, Ronda Hughes, Chas Malek, Ryan Manske, Al Voyna, Bruce Weigel, Bart Wilson and Jim Zajicek. 

Grants are awarded through HCCF’s competitive grant process to projects in the program areas of arts and culture, community betterment, education and youth development, environment and animal welfare, health and human service. Grant applicants must be a 501(c)(3) designated organization or government entity serving Howard County in order to be considered for funding. The 2024 grant cycle opens September 1 with an application deadline of October 15. The grant guidelines and application can be found at http://www.howardccf.org/.
