How retirees can support our region and benefit financially in 2026
At the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, we’re passionate about helping our donors make the greatest possible impact. One powerful tool for charitable giving many people overlook is the IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Below are answers to the most common questions we hear regarding IRA QCDs, sometimes referred to as the IRA Charitable Rollover.
Q1: What exactly is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?
A: A Qualified Charitable Distribution is a tax-favored gift made directly from your IRA to a qualified nonprofit. Instead of receiving your IRA distribution as taxable income, the funds go straight from your IRA custodian to the nonprofit, excluding that amount from your taxable income. This makes QCDs especially valuable for donors who take the standard deduction or want to reduce taxable income.
Q2: Who can make a QCD?
A: To make a QCD in 2026, you must be at least 70½ years old on the day the distribution is made. This age requirement hasn’t changed even though the age for required minimum distributions (RMDs) has increased to 73 under current law. So you can use QCDs for gifting before RMDs begin, giving you flexibility in your philanthropic planning.
Q3: How much can I give through a QCD in 2026?
A: The maximum annual QCD limit for 2026 is $111,000 per individual. Married couples filing jointly can each make a QCD from their own IRA up to this limit in the same year. The IRS adjusts this limit each year to keep up with inflation, so it could increase over time.
Q4: Does a QCD satisfy my Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?
A: Absolutely — if you are subject to RMDs. A QCD made in 2026 can count toward your RMD for the year, helping you meet your distribution requirement without increasing your taxable income. For people age 73 and older, this is especially valuable because it helps satisfy both your charitable goals and the IRS withdrawal rules.
Q5: Can I make a QCD even if I’m not required to take an RMD yet?
A: Yes. Because the QCD age (70½) is lower than the RMD age (73 in 2026), you can make QCDs even before RMDs are required. This offers tremendous flexibility, you can begin impactful giving earlier while still reducing taxable income.
Q6: Do QCDs qualify for a charitable deduction on my tax return?
A: A QCD itself does not generate a separate itemized charitable deduction on Schedule A. Instead, the gift is excluded from taxable income, which can provide similar or greater overall tax benefit, especially for taxpayers who don’t itemize.
Q7: Are there limits on which charities qualify?
A: Yes — the charity must be an IRS-qualified public charity. Be aware that donor-advised funds and private foundations are not eligible recipients for QCDs. However, many types of funds at the Community Foundation, including nonprofit endowment funds and named designated funds directed to a nonprofit organization, do qualify. This means that a QCD can directly support causes you care about here in Northeast Iowa.
Q8: How can giving through a QCD make a lasting impact here at home?
A: One inspiring way is by using your QCD to establish or contribute to an endowed fund at the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. Those endowed gifts can provide ongoing grant support for causes you love, long after the gift is made. For example, a donor could establish a named fund designated to a nonprofit or nonprofits with a QCD and watch it grow and help local organizations year after year. A donor could also make a QCD gift to an already existing nonprofit fund held at the Community Foundation. Click here to find a list of our nonprofit funds.
