How Volunteering Grows Generosity in Our Communities

Posted on April 13, 2026

At the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, we often see generosity take many forms. Sometimes it starts with a gift. But just as often, it begins with something simpler: showing up.

Volunteering, whether it’s mentoring a student, serving on a nonprofit board, helping at a local event, or lending a hand after a storm, does more than meet an immediate need. It creates connection. And that connection is often what deepens a person’s commitment to giving.

Research across the nonprofit sector reinforces what we see every day in our region: people who give their time are more likely to give financially, too. Not because they’re asked to, but because they’ve experienced the impact firsthand. They’ve met the people, seen the challenges, and become part of something bigger than themselves.

That’s where generosity grows.

Why it matters

When someone volunteers, they don’t just support a cause, they build relationships. They begin to understand how systems work, where gaps exist, and what’s possible with the right resources. Over time, that perspective often leads to deeper investment, whether through personal giving, donor-advised funds, or support for long-term initiatives.

It’s not a transaction. It’s a journey.

The role of the Community Foundation

At CFNEIA, we’re in a unique position to help connect these dots.

We work alongside nonprofits across our region, many of which rely on volunteers to deliver critical services. At the same time, we partner with donors and fundholders who are looking for meaningful ways to make a difference. When those two worlds intersect—when someone moves from giving time to giving resources—it strengthens the entire ecosystem.

That’s why we see volunteerism not as separate from philanthropy, but as part of the same story.

Because when people connect, generosity follows.

Turning your commitment and connection into lasting impact

For many people, volunteering is where it starts. But as that connection deepens, so does the desire to do more, and to do it thoughtfully.

That’s where the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa can help.

Through tools like charitable giving funds, including donor-advised funds, and flexible giving options such as appreciated assets and IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions, we make it easier to turn generosity into long-term impact. And here in Iowa, there’s a unique opportunity to do that in a way that’s especially effective.

Through the Endow Iowa Tax Credit, donors who give to a permanent endowment fund held with CFNEIA, or our local affiliate community foundations, may receive a 25% Iowa state tax credit on their gift, while still supporting the causes and communities they care about.

That means a gift can go further for both you and your community.

Whether you’re giving appreciated assets, organizing your annual giving, or thinking about a legacy gift, we work alongside you, and your professional advisors, to find the approach that fits your goals and your values.

Because doing good in your community today can also be an opportunity to do good in a way that’s intentional, sustainable, and built to last.

And when generosity is both heartfelt and well-planned, its impact only grows.
