Affiliate Volunteer Spotlight: Rich Scheffel

November 1, 2022

Name: Rich Scheffel
Affiliate: Fayette County Community Foundation
Committee member since: 2019 although currently serving as chair.

How did you hear about the Fayette County Community Foundation? What made you decide to volunteer with the Foundation?

"I'm a member of the Maynard City Council. At that particular time, Kelly Beacom, who had served on the Foundation board for six years and whose term limits were also coming to an end, just asked me if I would consider joining the board. He had just asked me to represent Maynard and that was the beginning of it."

What is your experience like as a Foundation volunteer?

"We have really good help from Terry Gaumer and Dotti Thompson. We can figure out how we're going to ask our questions, what we're going to do, and how we're going to disperse our money within what guidelines. We get to decide how to run our own affiliate organization with their guidance."

How does volunteering make you feel? Does it have an impact on your life?

"Well, I've always been a volunteer for as long as I can remember. I was a band director here in Maynard, I was on the booster club, I'm on the city council, I volunteer for things at our church, when my son was younger I volunteered for little league, Boy Scouts, and what seemed like everything else. Both my wife and I really believe in being volunteers; it makes us feel really good and a nice thing is that it gives a nice satisfaction."
