Green Scene was founded in 1976 as a 100% volunteer powered nonprofit group in response to the community’s tree loss from Dutch elm disease. The organization has contributed nearly $1 million to Black Hawk County for tree plantings, with the income raised from an annual plant sale. In recent years, Green Scene has given grants to replace ash trees damaged by the emerald ash borer. Green Scene has provided grants to nine cities in Black Hawk County with funds for street tree plantings and to nonprofit organizations for tree plantings. In addition, every school in the county was offered a tree for planting on Arbor Day. The group received the Governor’s Award and recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation. Green Scene leaves a legacy of tree planting in Black Hawk County, and its endowment ensures funds remain available to plant trees into the future.
