The David & Amy Lederman Family

David J. Lederman was born on September 12, 1970, in Waterloo, Iowa. Raised by a father who worked every day as a retailer in Evansdale, David learned the value of hard work and dedication at a very young age. His mother and father taught him and his brothers about the importance of family and togetherness.

David’s father took one day off every year - Thanksgiving Day. On that day, David, his father and his brothers would deliver Thanksgiving meals to shut-ins in Waterloo. Through this valuable tradition, David learned to appreciate his family, his stable home and his blessings. He felt extremely fortunate, and gained an understanding that not all families had as much as his did.

David attended school at Grant Elementary (now Walter Cunningham School of Excellence,) Bunger Middle School and Waterloo East High before graduating from Columbus High School in Waterloo. He went on to pursue a degree in history from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.

Amy C. Lederman, maiden name Bunger, was born on December 21, 1977, in Waterloo, Iowa. She was raised in Waterloo and attended school at Kingsley Elementary, Hoover Middle School and graduated from Waterloo West High School. Amy went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in economics and Master’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa.

David and Amy were married in Waterloo in 1998. They have been blessed with four wonderful children. They have two sons: Drew, born June 25, 1994; and Sidney, born September 14, 1998. They also have two daughters: Lillian, born January 21, 2001; and Isabell, born June 24, 2005.

When David was younger, he always knew he wanted to one day join Lederman Bonding Company, his family’s business. David currently works for the company as well as maintains part ownership of the business alongside his three brothers. The family also owns Lederman’s Clothing Store in Evansdale. Amy was fortunate to spend time at home with the children when they were young. However, in January 2007 Amy joined RSM McGladrey as an accountant.

David has invested many volunteer hours at Waterloo East High School and the Jesse Cosby Neighborhood Center over the years. As a family, David, Amy and the children enjoy spending time together outdoors and in the kitchen.

David and Amy always knew giving back was important. David said, “Giving to others was an unspoken rule in our families growing up...because we were lucky, we needed to help others.” The couple also decided it was important to start the process of giving while their family was young. 

David and Amy have strong, positive feelings about the Community Foundation. “We chose the Community Foundation for several reasons” said Amy, “We felt it was a dependable and well-organized place to help us achieve our goal of giving back to the community. And we really appreciated the idea of being able to set up a legacy, to be able to support programs now and into the future.”
