Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa sponsors Read Across America program

CFNEIA
February 27, 2018

The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa (CFNEIA) is the sponsor for the Read Across America event on March 2. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa, the Cedar Valley Jaycees and the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Rough Risers coordinate the local program, which is in its second year.

Approximately 125 volunteers will volunteer to read to 92 classrooms in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Community School Districts for 30 minutes. CFNEIA’s sponsorship allowed the program to expand to the Cedar Falls Community School District and will provide 2-3 books of the teachers’ choosing to leave behind in each participating classroom as gifts. CFNEIA staff also serve as volunteer readers for the program.

“The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa is proud to support this important program that helps create an excitement for reading in local students and creates a great volunteer opportunity,” said Kaye Englin, CFNEIA President and CEO. “We hope our sponsorship allows the program to continue to build momentum as it celebrates reading for fun and as a building block for education.”

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. Nationally the event is sponsored by the National Education Association and locally the Cedar Valley initiative is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.
